Blue Run Emerald Rye – A Rye Lover’s Delight!

Blue Run Emerald Rye is the second release in the company’s rye whiskey series and is the follow-up to Blue Run Golden Rye. This rye whiskey has a pleasant opening with sweeter undertones, along with a flavor profile full of dominant spices and pepper. The finish is a blast of fiery spice with hints of vanilla and aged oak. Overall, this whiskey is full of bold flavor that will please lovers of rye whiskey.

Nose

The scent of Blue Run Emerald Rye is delightful, with hints of rye grain, peppercorn spice, light caramel, and even a hint of buttercream frosting.

Palate

We enjoyed a well-rounded palate of rye spice, spiced caramel, aged oak, baking spices, cloves, light cream undertone, and a generous amount of pepper spice.

Finish

The finish was a blast of spice, with a touch of vanilla, aged oak, and faint caramel, followed by a lingering prickly rye spice.

Uniqueness

As the first Blue Run Rye Whiskey to be contract distilled by Blue Run Liquid Advisor Jim Rutledge at Castle & Key Distiller in Frankfort, Kentucky, and the first to be bottled at barrel proof, this whiskey is certainly unique and worthy of a try. As noted in the press release, the difference in aging environments helped contribute to the blend’s approachability at this high of proof.

Value

For the flavor profile and complexity it presents, the price point of Blue Run Emerald Rye is quite reasonable.

Overall

Using new distillate from Castle & Key, Blue Run Emerald Rye delivers a sip that will please rye lovers who love their whiskey on the spicy side. The sip’s opening is pleasing if not on the mild side and the palate delivers in spades with heat and spice. The finish is incredibly long offering a warming prickly spice that seems to never end. We highly recommend this whiskey for its bold flavor and reasonable price
