Traverse City Whiskey Co. Sherry Barrel Finish Straight Bourbon: A Preview

The Traverse City Whiskey Co. has released their new Finishing Series line of whiskeys. This initial release features a 5 year old bourbon finished in port wine barrels, a 5 year old 100% rye finished in cabernet franc barrels, and a 5 year old bourbon finished in Pedro Ximenez Sherry barrels. This sherry barrel finish straight bourbon doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but instead offers a delicately layered fruit forward whiskey that is sure to be enjoyed by most.

Nose

The nose is on the sweet and fruity side, with candied cherries, strawberries, and raspberries being present along with an interesting root beer back side.

Palate

The palate nicely layers black raspberries and raisin notes followed by light pecan and sweet oak.

Finish

The finish showcases the bourbon’s 36% rye mashbill with rye spice present before transitioning to leather, tobacco leaf, and milk chocolate.

Uniqueness

This bourbon takes its sherry finish with ease, offering a gentle, yet flavorful sip that gives it a unique and compelling taste.

Value

The value of this sherry finished whiskey is great and definitely worth a try.

Overall

Traverse City’s sherry finished bourbon is nicely balanced and a pleasure to sip. This whiskey is approachable and fruit-forward and we can definitely see why Traverse City has started the Finishing Series out with this particular whiskey
