Hinterhaus American Single Malt ‘Discovery’ Review

Located 4,000 feet above sea level in the Sierra Mountains of California, Hinterhaus Distillery produces vodka, gin, and liqueurs distilled from local Northern California wines, and sources and finishes their sourced bourbon in a number of used vineyards’ casks that are locally produced. Their first in-house American single malt is called ‘Discovery’. This whiskey is made with 6 different types of malted barley, and part of the batch is aged in first fill ex-American single malt oak casks, and the other part in new heavy toast #3 char American oak casks for at least 18 months before being blended together.

Nose:

Cherry | Apple | Grape | Vanilla wafer | Crisp

Palate:

Nougat | Honey | Butter | Sugarcane | Creamy | Satisfying viscosity | Light & sweet leaning

Finish:

Malt | Cereal grain | Ritz cracker | Quick drop off of flavor | Short

Overall:

Where it lacks in complexity, Hinterhaus American Single Malt Discovery makes up for in pure approachability for new malt drinkers. Its nose contains a balanced mix of fruity aromas; cherry, apple, and grape. On the palate, the sweet notes of nougat, honey, butter, and sugarcane take center stage, balanced with a creamy viscosity. The finish is malty, though nowhere near as intense as many other American single malts. If you are malt-curious and looking to try your first single malt, this whiskey is a great choice. There aren’t many approachable single malts on the market and it’s a nice to have “Discovery” join that short list.
