Review: Fortuitous Union Batch 002: Finished in a William Larue Weller Cask

Nose

Aromas of molasses and fennel mingle with maple sugar candy and raisin, providing an earthy undertone with a rich influence from the rum. All in all, it’s quite punchy.

Palate

The palate carries a heavy mouthfeel and adds to the rum-dominant profile with notes of brown sugar, graham cracker, maple syrup, and a hint of oak. The allspice also enhances the experience.

Finish

The finish is a flash of spice that quickly turns to a plateau of heat with molasses, rum, anise and seasoned oak. The few sweeter notes of light caramel are featured, too, and all the flavors sit nicely for a long and sweet finish.

Overall

Jordan Morris and Turner Wathen of Foursquare Rum have produced a flavorful combination of rum and rye with a 12 year old Trini rum finished in ex-William Larue Weller barrels. The rum-dominant finish offers a punchy nose, a heavy palate, and a long and sweet finish. Although this blend isn’t as refined as expected, it still offers a unique flavor profile that rum enthusiasts will love. Those in search of more prominent rye and bourbon flavors, however, may not find what they’re looking for. Still, this is an enjoyable release with great complexity for its proof and value.
