King of Kentucky 2023 Release Review
The King of Kentucky bourbon releases have been consistently good since Brown-Forman started releasing them in 2018. This is the sixth edition and it has a 16 year age statement and a lower proof compared to previous releases. Let’s dive into the review of this year’s expression.
Nose
Aged charred oak, dark brown sugar, cocoa powder, and dark fruits all resonate on the nose. This expression has great intensity and it is very well balanced.
Palate
The palate of this release is layered with candied grapes, stewed dark fruits, and fruit cake all enhanced by seasoned oak. The flavors are beautifully balanced and the mouthfeel is robust and velvety.
Finish
The finish has a long life and it is robust, with notes of spiced dark fruits, charred aged oak, dry oak, and a mildly tannic note. The oak note is perfectly tempered.
Uniqueness
This bourbon truly stands out from the rest, as evidenced by the nickname “King of Kentucky.”
Value
Since this release is only released in small batches, the bottles are quite rare and hard to come by, making them quite valuable.
Overall
The King of Kentucky 2023 Release is a stunning expression with great flavor and complexity. They don’t call it King of Kentucky for nothing. Pound for pound, it tastes just as intense as higher proof bourbons, and yet its lower proof allows for more cohesiveness and balance. This is truly a whisky to be appreciated, and while it’s not available to everyone, this will be a release to remember for years to come
