Lost Lantern 2023 Single Cask #8: Still Austin, A Review

Lost Lantern recently released a single cask selection distilled in Still Austin, Texas. According to the company’s press release, the Summer of Bourbon series features a variety of whiskeys including this Single Cask Series. Read on to get my impression of what this whiskey has to offer.

Nose

This Austin-born bourbon has a bouquet of buttered pecan, light cinnamon powder, sweetbread, rye grain, and fresh oak.

Palate

On the palate, I experienced a combination of peppery oak, dry leather, light bundt cake, rye spice, burnt caramel, and a touch of baking spices.

Finish

The finish is comprised of a lasting rye spice, leather, green pepper, dry oak, and a lingering peppery spice and warming heat.

Uniqueness

Texas whiskeys often have the advantage of having deeper tones due to the fact that the barrels age in hot temperatures. This particular bourbon is a great example of that.

Value

This barrel produced only 167 bottles, so it has somewhat limited availability.

Overall

Overall, I found this whiskey enjoyable. The rich baking notes are nicely counterbalanced by the leather and spices while still providing a unique experience, giving this bourbon an identity all is own. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a Texas craft whiskey experience
