Irish Oak Casks: A Resurrected Legacy

Reviving a Thousand-Year-Old Tradition

A fallen giant, a 1,000-year-old wild Irish oak tree, has found a new purpose: to be transformed into rare Irish oak casks. This unique project, a collaboration between Boann Distillery and Kentucky Bourbon Barrel cooperage, will bring to life Preston’s brand of Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey.

Irish Oak’s Rarity and Significance

“It is extremely rare that Irish oak is used to craft casks,” explains Peter Cooney of Boann Distillery. This project revives a traditional whiskey cask crafting technique that has been dormant in Ireland for centuries.

Preston’s Legacy and the Revival of the Brand

The Preston family, descendants of renowned whiskey bonders, are collaborating on this project. The casks will be used to age and produce Preston’s whiskey, a brand that dates back to the late 19th century.

Collaboration and Innovation Drive the Project

“It’s great to see the idea evolve from a conversation in 2018 to an innovative collaboration,” says Arthur Preston of Swainstown Farm. This project showcases the power of heritage, innovation, and collaboration.

Crafted with Care: From Tree to Cask

The ancient oak’s lower body will be shipped to France, where it will be made into staves and air-dried for 24 months. These staves will then be returned to Ireland and transformed into casks by skilled coopers.

A Unique Mashbill for a Distinctive Whiskey

The Preston’s mashbill that will be laid down in the Irish oak casks is Vintage Mashbill XI, a secret recipe from the Boann’s 2021 Vintage Mashbill Project. This mashbill will contribute to the whiskey’s distinctive character.

Bringing Ancient Ireland to the Glass

“By using Irish Oak, we can bring a piece of ancient Ireland to the glasses of future connoisseurs,” says Peter Cooney. This project promises to create a whiskey that captures the essence of Ireland’s rich heritage.
