Mystic Farm & Distillery Launches World’s First Space-Aged Bourbon

Mystic Farm & Distillery, a small independent distiller from the hills of Tennessee, is making history by releasing the world’s first bourbon aged in space.

The idea for aging whiskey in space came from distillery owner Josh Wilcox. Wilcox was intrigued by the idea of working with a space-based research group to age the whiskey in a different atmosphere. After much research, Wilcox decided to collaborate with NanoRacks, a private research organization based in Houston.

A Different Experience

Wilcox wanted to make sure the aging experience was different than the typical method. After settling on aging in space, Wilcox decided to send the whiskey in those distinctive NanoRacks CubeSat containers for a total of 60 days. The whiskey was launched in December 2020 from Cape Canaveral and returned to Earth in February 2021.

A New Perspective on Aging

The resulting whiskey is the first of its kind. Wilcox says “No one has ever done this experiment before. The whiskey has an incredibly unique flavor, it’s sweet, oaky and almost floral. We can’t wait for people to try it!”

The aging process in space produced notes of toasted oak, cinnamon, apples, and vanilla as well as a very smooth finish.

It should come as no surprise that the whiskey has already received a lot of attention from whiskey aficionados.

What’s Next?

Mystic Farm & Distillery is excited to continue this research and collaborate with NanoRacks on other projects. Wilcox says, “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with NanoRacks. Aging whiskey in space is a fascinating process, and I can’t wait to see what else we can do together.”

Mystic Farm & Distillery is already selling their space-aged bourbon and it’s available now at select locations in Tennessee and online.

No matter where you’re from, be sure to pick up a bottle and experience history in a glass!
