New Riff Releases Pair of Eight-Year-Old Whiskeys

New Riff Distillery has released a pair of eight-year-old straight Kentucky rye whiskeys. The whiskeys are the new additions to their portfolio, which currently includes wheated bourbon, single barrel bourbon, high-rye bourbon, and more.

Background

New Riff was founded in 2014 by Ken Lewis, a retired pharmacist from Ohio. The company’s goal is to create premium whiskeys that honor Kentucky’s distilling traditions. To that end, they adhere to the strict standards of the Kentucky Distillers’ Association, though they also create their own unique expressions.

Eight-Year-Old Whiskeys

The new eight-year-old whiskeys were distilled in December 2011 and bottled in May 2020. New Riff has released two expressions — a 95-proof straight rye and a barrel-proof straight rye — in limited quantities. Both are bottled-in-bond and non-chill filtered.

The 95-proof expression is blended from barrels aged for a minimum of eight years and has notes of caramel and delicate spices on the nose, with flavors of oak, maple syrup, and pepper on the palate. The barrel-proof expression is a single barrel whiskey that’s aged for at least eight years and has notes of molasses, leather, and dark chocolate on the nose, with hints of toasted coconut and baking spice on the palate.

Availability

The whiskeys are available exclusively at select retail stores in Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana, though they can also be purchased online. The 95-proof expression comes in a 375ml bottle and has a suggested retail price of $35, while the barrel-proof expression comes in a 750ml bottle and has a suggested retail price of $50.

Conclusion

New Riff’s newest whiskeys demonstrate the distillery’s commitment to creating unique expressions that honor the traditions of Kentucky’s distilling heritage. The whiskeys are certain to be a hit among whiskey lovers, and are sure to add even more depth and complexity to New Riff’s already impressive portfolio
