Overrated Bourbon Brands

Pappy Van Winkle

As one of the most sought-after bourbons on the market, Pappy Van Winkle has garnered significant hype and attention. However, some bartenders find it overrated, citing its unjustifiably inflated price and the hassle associated with securing an allocation.

“It’s nothing special — just a separate label, basically. In no world is it worth the markup let alone the hassle of securing the allocation,” says Ramsey Musk, beverage director at Accomplice Bar in Los Angeles.

Blanton’s

Another highly coveted bourbon, Blanton’s has a loyal following. However, some bartenders question its value, given its high price point and the availability of more affordable, equally exceptional options.

“It is undoubtedly a great product, but its price point (particularly on the secondary market) never fails to give me sticker shock, especially when there are so many great bourbon options available at a better value,” remarks Carly Lacoste, bar director at The Dog House in New Orleans.

Basil Hayden

With its diverse range of expressions all bottled at a lower proof, Basil Hayden aims to appeal to casual drinkers. However, Teddy Martinez, bartender at Melrose Umbrella Co. in Los Angeles, finds it underwhelming.

“Having eight available expressions all at 80 proof (40 percent ABV) is a travesty to bourbon and whiskey in general. It’s not about getting drunk off a higher proof; it’s about those having so much character resulting from the higher proof they’re bottled at. Basil Hayden is diet bourbon,” Martinez asserts.

W.L. Weller

While Sean Fitzmaurice of Reserve 101 appreciates the Weller lineup, he considers it overrated due to its inflated secondary market pricing.

“If you can find it priced as intended you won’t be disappointed,” Fitzmaurice says. “Unfortunately, for the common whiskey hunter, you’re going to pay significantly over, and there are some really great producers out there these days that are readily available for half the price and even less heartbreak.”

Angel’s Envy

Known for its sweet, approachable flavor profile, Angel’s Envy has become a popular choice among bourbon enthusiasts. However, Daniel Boothe, bartender at Club 616 in Santa Ana, California, expresses his frustration with its overwhelming popularity.

“If one more f**ker asks if we have Angel’s Envy, I’m gonna lose it,” Boothe exclaims.

Celebrity-Driven Spirits

In the realm of spirits, celebrity endorsements have become increasingly common. However, some bartenders believe that these collaborations often prioritize marketing over quality, resulting in overrated products.

“In a world full of celebrity-driven spirits, the most overrated bourbon is a long list to whittle down. It’s our job to sell the first pour, and it’s up to the juice in the bottle to sell the second,” says Fitzmaurice.

It is important to note that these opinions are subjective and based on personal preferences. The beauty of bourbon lies in its diversity, allowing each individual to find their own favorites. Ultimately, the best way to determine what constitutes an overrated bourbon is through personal experience and exploration of the vast array of options available.

some, they may still appeal to others who appreciate their unique qualities. It’s important to approach bourbon with an open mind and explore a wide range of brands to discover what truly resonates with your palate.
