Penelope Valencia Bourbon Review
Penelope Bourbon has been travelling down a unique barrel finish journey during the second half of 2022. For this release, Valencia, they feature their four grain bourbon blend finished in vino de naranja casks from Spain.
Nose
Orange cream | Bubble gum | Baking spice | Fresh cut lumber | Burnt orange rind
Palate
Burnt Orange | Orange cream | Floral | French vanilla
Finish
Baking spices | White pepper | Walnut | Bitter
Overall
A unique barrel finish bourbon that comes out swinging with orange as its main flavor component, but is let down by its finish.
Valencia has bold notes of orange throughout its sip, ranging from sweet orange cream, to robust burnt orange rind. The finish features baking spices and white pepper, but emphasizes the bitter notes more than one would usually expect. As this whiskey has deliberate shades of an Old Fashioned cocktail in its construction, the finish gives off a taste like too much bitters had been used. Penelope has a unique concept here, and I’m hoping they can finetune it to bring out the best of the orange and wood flavors.
