The History
Ruth Booe Hunt, the founder of Ruth Hunt Candy Co., began making candy in her kitchen in 1921. She was inspired by her mother’s homemade sweets, and soon her creations became popular among her friends and family. With the encouragement of her husband and neighbors, Ruth decided to turn her hobby into a business, and opened her first shop in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky.
Over the years, the business grew, and Ruth Hunt Candy Co. became known for its high-quality, handcrafted candies. Today, the company is still family-owned and operated, and continues to use traditional recipes and techniques to create its sweets.
The Invention
One of Ruth Hunt Candy Co.’s most famous creations is the bourbon ball, a creamy confection made with bourbon and chocolate, and rolled in powdered sugar. Some say the bourbon ball was invented by Ruth Hunt herself, while others credit her son, Gene, with coming up with the recipe. Regardless of who was responsible, the bourbon ball has become an iconic Kentucky treat, and a must-try for visitors to the state.
The first bourbon balls were made with Old Grand-Dad bourbon, which was readily available at the time. Today, Ruth Hunt Candy Co. uses Woodford Reserve bourbon to make its bourbon balls. The company also makes a variety of other bourbon-flavored candies, including bourbon creams, bourbon truffles, and bourbon fudge.
The Store
Ruth Hunt Candy Co. has three locations in Kentucky: one in Mt. Sterling, one in Lexington, and one in Berea. Each store has a friendly, old-fashioned atmosphere, and is filled with delicious treats. Customers can watch candy being made in the kitchen, and sample some of the company’s famous bourbon balls.
In addition to bourbon balls, Ruth Hunt Candy Co. offers a wide variety of other sweets, including chocolates, caramels, toffees, and brittles. The company also sells gift baskets and boxes, which make great souvenirs or presents for loved ones.
