In the realm of bourbon, Wild Turkey is a name that needs no introduction. Nested in the verdant landscapes of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, it has been operating since the 1940s and offers an astounding array of whiskey choices ranging from affordable quality spirits to premium, limited-edition bourbon.
The distillery is a family-run affair marshaled by the esteemed Master Distiller Jimmy Russell and his son Eddie Russell. Together, they’ve been distilling whiskey for over 101 years – an enduring legacy that cements Wild Turkey’s reputation as a beacon of quality and craftsmanship in the bourbon industry.
Master’s Keep One
The first of the two limited editions we are considering this week is the Master’s Keep One. While most bourbon aficionados might predominantly associate Wild Turkey with spicy, high-rye bourbons, the brand isn’t afraid to surprise their fans. And the Master’s Keep One is definitely one such pleasant surprise.
Blended by Eddie Russell, the Master’s Keep One eschews the high-rye approach in favor of a corn-rich blend. This assures a lighter, younger, and sweeter palate that is perfect for those keen on indulging in softer and sweeter whisky expressions. It is a blend of bourbons aged anywhere from 9 to 14 years and comes in at a nice, hefty 101 proof. Of course, being a limited edition, the Master’s Keep One is presented in a stately, faceted decanter — a welcome addition to any bourbon enthusiast’s cabinet.
Taste Notes
The initial taste is sweet and soft with vanilla and orchard fruit notes. It then moves towards the spicy spectrum of the palate, with hints of oak and a charred, smoky finish. The transition is smooth, the conclusion satisfyingly warm.
Master’s Keep Legend
If Master’s Keep One emphasizes sweetness and softness, the Master’s Keep Legend is its bold, brash cousin that is ready to dazzle you with its complexity and depth. Another creation by Eddie Russell, the Legend is significantly different from One, both in terms of age and blend.
This is a blend that consists of bourbons aged 10 to 20 years and comes with an audacious proof of 106. As with One, the Legend is also presented in a decanter that articulates sophistication and serenity – making it a terrific gift, or a handsome mantlepiece in your own whiskey collection.
Taste Notes
Unlike the One, the Legend brings a stronger flavor profile, including rich dark chocolate and oak, aromas of caramel and vanilla, and ends with a spice-heavy finish. It will appeal to seasoned bourbon lovers who take delight in a long, full flavor exploration with each sip.
