Peerless Bourbon: Forging a Resilient Path to Success After a Century

Starting Over: A New Chapter for Peerless Distilling Co.

Life often presents us with a choice between the easiest and the long road. While the easiest route appeals to most because of its convenience and quick results, the latter guarantees a better quality results, although it takes longer to manifest. In the case of Kentuckian businessman Corky Taylor, the easy way out was never a part of the plan. Fourth-generation Peerless Distilling Co., as the dramatic comeback of the century, is a resounding statement of this choice to take the path less traveled.

The Historical Bourbon Industry in Kentucky

Kentucky’s rich history is soaked in bourbon. Connoisseurs of this quintessentially American spirit know all too well that Kentucky was where it all began. Distilleries were prominent throughout the state, with brands such as Buffalo Trace, Maker’s Mark, and Woodford Reserve becoming household names. However, not every distillery managed to survive both the test of time and the tumultuous ups and downs caused by factors such as Prohibition and economic recessions.

Peerless Distilling Co.: A Tale of Resurgence

One such casualty was Peerless Distilling Co., a distillery initially established in the 1880s by then successful businessman Henry Kraver. After a steady expansion of the business at the beginning of the 20th century, Peerless fell victim to the daunting constraints of Prohibition in the 1920s and eventually closed its doors in 1917, effectively ceasing all production.

And so, for nearly a century, the distillery lay dormant, its copper stills silent and its wooden barrels empty. All seemed lost until Corky Taylor, great-grandson of Henry Kraver, decided to resurrect the brand and return it to its past glory.

The Importance of Pushing Towards Quality

Corky Taylor understood one thing: quality can never be compromised. He knew that it was the superior quality that had carried Peerless to its initial success, and he was determined to keep it at the center of its resurgence. Making a significant shift from the common industry practices, Taylor chose not to source whiskey from other distilleries, but to distill from scratch – a process that took over four years before the first bottle of Peerless Bourbon could be sold.

Staying True to Heritage

The focus on quality over quantity, tradition over complexity, and heritage over convenience forms the core ethos of the Peerless approach. Deciding to age their whiskey for a full four years is a direct reflection of this ethos. While other distilleries may choose faster, more cost-effective methods for aging, Peerless stands by the traditional standards – severe risk considering the significant investment and time involved.

Reaping the Rewards of Patience

However, the gamble appears to have paid off. Despite the initial hurdles and time investment, Peerless Bourbon finally hit the shelves in 2019 and has been making waves in the industry ever since. The Peerless team stood by their belief that good things come to those who wait – and it seems bourbon lovers across the nation agree.

Star of the Century

As we look back at the journey, and forward to the future, it’s clear the path less traveled wasn’t just the right choice. It was the only choice. Peerless Distilling Co. proudly stands as proof that taking the path of most resistance often leads to the most satisfying rewards.

In a world where patience is a rare commodity, Peerless has shown that when it comes to creating a spirit that embodies the soul of a century and the heart of a family legacy, waiting can indeed make all the difference.
